Dialled SIWSX 06/07 R1

(SIWSX 06/07? WTF? An bad acronym maybe, but the series is the "Dialled Bikes Sheffield Indoor Winter Supercross 2006/2007 BMX & MTB Racing" series, so for this article we're calling it SIWSX - Round 1).

On a freezing morning suffering with a bit of exhaustion and to much beer from the night before I was leaving half an hour later than intended. So, with an hours journey to do in half an hour, could it be done? Not likely. And with my Dad setting the GPS to the wrong destination it made things even harder.

Now, 45 minutes late and after a pick up in Luton, Mat and myself (above) where off. We arrived at the redeveloped track in good time. Not as many riders as I had expected but enough to make a race. luckily for me I was allowed to choose my number so opted for the ever popular number 69.

Practice started and Mat and myself where struggling, and to see all the little whippets on BMX's broke our hearts. Come gate practice things only got worse.

Racing was good from all age groups. Oggy (above) looking unbeatable in pro MTB, our very own Mat Wilson on the DBS team was pulling in some good results (though lady luck had a fair hand in that) and I even surprised myself by getting some good results, but how I went from ridding like a complete nob in practice to ridding relatively smooth come race time baffled me! Nice though.

In senior MTB it was Dave Richardson (above) who took a very close win.

In the 4th moto of Pro MTB, Steve Taylor (above) of Dialled Bikes got the better snap and managing to hold off Oggy on the first corner, got into a comfortable lead. But, just as I was thinking the win was his, he managed to do something only Lee Whyte is capable of doing. On the second corner, with no pressure from anyone, he crashed on his own (below) and Oggy took the opportunity to go from third to first for his final win of the day.

My personal highlight of the day was watching Mat Wilson of DBS proving that pedaling quick is not always fast, when in one particular moto he had time to watch Shane read crash in the first corner, roll over, get up and carry on pedaling, by the time Mat had caught up! This didn't faze him one bit, as he carefully proceeded to the next corner with every confidence he made the move of the day from going from last to first. maybe the crash helped him, maybe it didn't, who nows?

Also, but maybe a little harsh to laugh, watchin Steve Taylor throw his bike down like a little girl in the final was gooden. He did see the funny side in the end though. See...

Well done to everyone that rode at sheffield at the weekend. Thank you to Dialled Bikes for the sponsor, Chris at NPS for making it happen and to Dave Taylor and everyone at Sheffield that did an excellent job on the new track.

Gareth.

More of Mat's pictures at Flickr and he'll no doubt have a bit more to say from the BMX side of things.
